Book Binding: The Long and Link Stitch

March 31 @ 12:00 am - April 1 @ 11:59 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 12:00 am, repeating until March 31, 2019

Mar 31-31 9-5 each day preregistration required $90

In this two-day bookbinding workshop participants will create historical non-adhesive sewn books.
Dating from the thirteenth century, the long stitch binding has a decorative history. Highly adaptable to
a variety of applications from sketchbooks to artist’s books, these binding structures open flat and
provide endless opportunities to incorporate design. We will begin with simple sewing and quickly move
to decorative sewing patterns and techniques by first viewing samples, practicing on templates, and
then making Long and Link Stitch binding models. We will explore decorative paper techniques for end
sheets and covers including painterly paste papers and natural dye techniques. Demonstrations and
discussion will include a variety of approaches for sewing patterns, paper cut-outs, and adding other
elements to both the inside and outside of the books. We will discuss the historical origins of these
structures and develop some contemporary approaches for interdisciplinary use and literacy through
book arts in the classroom.
